Although Peele’s follow up to the brilliant Get Out (2017) didn’t garner quite the same level of acclaim, Us is still a thrilling, subversive little gem. The clever title clues us in that this is both an interior (a ‘typical’ family menaced by doppelgängers of themselves) drama and an exterior, ambitious state of the union allegory. Open to multiple interpretations, what holds it all together is Lupita Nyong'o's superbly unsettling dual portrayal and Peele’s cheeky sense of horror movie history. Now a major player in American cinema it will be fascinating to see what this talented writer-director-producer does next.
