A Kramer vs Kramer for the 21st century, Noah Baumbach’s ninth feature is up there with his very best work. Beautifully structured, written & acted (Scar Jo’s best film role since Under the Skin; Driver’s star continues to rise to stratospheric levels) and with canny, unforgettable supporting roles for great actors like Dern, Liotta, and Alda) this is a funny, sad and richly entertaining film. Said to be partly autobiographical (Baumbach’s divorce from Jennifer Jason Leigh) our empathy switches between the two brilliant leads, although ultimately it’s clear where Baumbach’s generous sympathies lie!
