Following a few months after Alfonso Cuaron’s masterly Roma, our fave movie of 2018, Lila Aviles’ wonderful film The Chambermaid covers slightly similar ground but in a far more intimate, less expansive and contained way. Gabriela Cartol is terrific as young chambermaid Eve, working in an unnamed Mexican city at a luxurious hotel, where her inner struggle to fight the monotony of her role and the unthinking slights and insults of various guests is conveyed purely by the director’s subtle, understated camera style. Themes slowly emerge as we identify totally with Eve’s daily grind. The opening sequence alone would make this is a special achievement and it will be fascinating to see what this talented director does next!
